Eyelids

Eyelids do more than just allow us to blink. They protect the surface of the eye, spread tears evenly with each blink, and contribute to visual comfort. When the eyelids are inflamed, too loose, too tight, drooping, or deformed, this can lead to discomfort, redness, irritation, and a decrease in visual quality.
Eyelid conditions are common, especially with aging, dry eyes, allergies, or certain skin diseases. Among the most frequent conditions are:

    • Stye (hordeolum): a small, painful infection of an eyelash follicle, with localized redness and sometimes a small pus-filled bump.
    • Chalazion: a small lump in the eyelid, usually not painful at first, caused by inflammation of a gland (Meibomian gland).
    • Blepharitis: chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins, causing burning, stinging, crusting, or stuck-together eyelashes.
    • Ptosis (drooping eyelid): the upper eyelid abnormally droops and may partially cover the pupil, interfering with vision.
    • Dermatochalasis (excess skin): loosening of the eyelid skin, often age-related, which may obstruct the visual field or cause a feeling of heaviness.
    • Entropion: inward turning of the eyelid, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea and leading to pain, redness, and risk of corneal injury.
    • Ectropion: outward turning of the eyelid, preventing proper eye closure and promoting dryness, tearing, and irritation.

Less commonly: eyelid lesions and tumors: moles, small growths, cysts, or benign or malignant skin tumors.
Early diagnosis allows most of these conditions to be treated effectively and helps protect the ocular surface.

Medical treatment of eyelid conditions

Depending on the diagnosis, your ophthalmologist may recommend:

    • Eyelid hygiene care: gentle cleansing, warm compresses, and massage of the eyelid margins.
    • Eye drops and ointments: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, or lubricants to reduce inflammation and protect the ocular surface.
    • Treatment of associated factors: management of dry eye disease, allergies, or skin conditions (rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, etc.).
    • Monitoring of lesions: photography and regular follow-up when there is uncertainty regarding an eyelid lesion.

Many eyelid problems improve with appropriate local treatment and regular hygiene measures.
In some cases, eyelid surgery may be recommended.
