LASIK: fast and effective laser vision correction

Description: Information about LASIK laser eye surgery in Geneva: indications, procedure, benefits, recovery and risks. A reference laser technique used to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most widely used laser vision correction procedure worldwide. It corrects:

  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Astigmatism

The technique consists of creating a thin corneal flap using a femtosecond laser, then reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser.

LASIK offers extremely fast visual recovery—often the next day.

Who is a good candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is suitable for patients who:

  • are over 18–20 years old,
  • have a stable prescription for 1–2 years,
  • have a regular and sufficiently thick cornea,
  • do not have keratoconus or progressive corneal disease.

Corneal topography is essential to confirm LASIK eligibility.

How the LASIK procedure works

The procedure takes about 10–15 minutes for both eyes and includes:

  • Outpatient surgery (same-day discharge),
  • Local anaesthesia with numbing drops,
  • Creation of a corneal flap with a femtosecond laser,
  • Excimer laser reshaping of the cornea,
  • Repositioning of the flap without stitches.

The surgery is painless and fast.

Advantages of LASIK

  • Very fast recovery (functional vision often the next day),
  • Minimal discomfort after surgery,
  • Quick and stable results,
  • Precise, customised treatment,
  • Astigmatism correction included.

An excellent option for active individuals, drivers and screen users.

Postoperative recovery

  • Clear vision the next day,
  • Mild irritation or foreign-body sensation for a few hours,
  • Eye drops for 1–2 weeks,
  • Avoid swimming pools, eye rubbing and makeup for a few days.

Risks and limitations

  • Temporary dry eye,
  • Halos or glare at night,
  • Flap-related complications (rare),
  • Not suitable for thin or irregular corneas (PRK or SMILE preferred).

These risks are rare and discussed during the preoperative consultation.
