Pediatric ophthalmology

Vision plays a crucial role in a child’s overall development, from early childhood through adolescence.
Pediatric ophthalmology consultations allow for the screening and management of many visual disorders in children. Early diagnosis of visual problems is essential in order to implement appropriate treatment and avoid long-term consequences on a child’s visual development and learning.

How a pediatric ophthalmology consultation is conducted

A pediatric ophthalmology consultation is adapted to the child’s age and generally takes place in several stages:

    • Medical history (anamnesis): questions for the parents about family history, pregnancy and birth, the child’s development, and any symptoms that may have been observed.
    • Measurement of visual acuity: performed in an age-appropriate manner. In very young children, visual acuity may be assessed indirectly.
    • Examination of eye movements and screening for strabismus.
    • Refraction examination (vision measurement): performed objectively. In children, refraction is often measured after instillation of cycloplegic eye drops to relax accommodation and obtain a more accurate measurement.
    • Slit-lamp examination and fundus examination: to closely examine the structures of the eye (cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, etc.) and detect any abnormalities. In children, the fundus examination is often performed after pupil dilation with eye drops.
    • Measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry): if necessary, particularly when glaucoma is suspected.
    • Additional examinations if needed.

The pediatric ophthalmologist takes the time to explain the examination results to the parents, answer their questions, and propose appropriate management if necessary.
Tips to facilitate your child’s pediatric ophthalmology consultation:

    • Schedule the appointment at a time of day when your child is well rested and available.
    • Bring your child’s medical history and any glasses they may already have.
    • Simply explain the consultation process to your child using age-appropriate words and reassure them.
    • Do not hesitate to accompany your child during the examinations and reassure them if needed.

A pediatric ophthalmology consultation is an important step in protecting your child’s visual health. Do not hesitate to book an appointment at our ophthalmology clinic in Geneva for a comprehensive eye examination.
